Schedule 40 PVC pipe, with a 2-inch diameter, can handle a pressure of 166 psi, while Schedule 80 PVC pipe, with thicker walls, can handle a pressure of up to 243 psi. Schedule 40 PVC pipe is suitable for almost all residential swimming pool plumbing, while Schedule 80 is not commonly used for swimming pools, mainly due to its much higher cost.
